Andrzej Walicki

1998 Balzan Prize for the Cultural and Social History of the Slavonic World

For his exceptional contribution to the study of the cultural and social history of Russia and Poland, as well as that of European culture in the 19th century. His work is on the highest level of research dedicated to the philosophical and political thought of societies where the debate between Liberalism and Marxism took on particular importance in the 19th century. This debate is still instrumental to an understanding of our present time.

Andrzej Walicki, born in Warsaw, on 15 May 1930, is a citizen of Poland, naturalized in USA (1993).

MA (1953) and PhD (1957) from the University of Warsaw;

Lecturer at the Department of Sociology, University of Warsaw (1958-1960);

at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology, Polish Academy of Sciences (1960-1981);

Habilitation thesis (1964) in the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he became a Dozent (1964), a Professor (1972) and Head of the Department of Modern Polish Philosophy and Social Thought (1968-1981);

he was elected a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 1994 and a full member in 1998.

Senior Research FeIlow (1981-1986) in the History of ldeas Unit, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University in Canberra, Australia;

since 1986, he holds the O’Neill Chair at the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.

Visiting Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford (1966-1967 and 1973), and a Guggenheim Fellow (1990-1991);

Visiting Professor or Research Fellow in numerous universities or research centres in Australia, Austria, Denmark, England, Japan, Switzerland and USA;

member of several Learned Societies in Poland and USA.

ANDRZEJ WALICKI has published more than twenty books in Polish and in English, some of which have been translated into Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. His list of publications also includes more than twenty edited or introduced books, and a great number of scholarly articles in different languages.
