Jean-Jacques Hublin

2023 Balzan Prize for Evolution of Humankind: Paleoanthropology

For the importance of his discoveries in the field, notably that of the oldest Homo sapiens in Africa; for his ability to synthesise data from cutting-edge technologies; for his skills in organising scientific teams, notably as head of the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig; and for his qualities as a teacher and populariser.

Jean-Jacques Hublin, né le 30 novembre 1953 en Algérie, est un citoyen français.

Après une carrière au CNRS, il a rejoint l’enseignement supérieur en tant que professeur à l’Université de Bordeaux (1999-2004). Il a également enseigné à l’Université de Californie à Berkeley (1992), à l’Université Harvard (1997), à l’Université Stanford (1999 et 2011) ainsi qu’à l’Université de Leyde (2010-2020).

En 2004, le professeur Hublin a créé puis dirigé le Département d’Evolution Humaine de l’Institut Max Planck d’Anthropologie évolutionnaire à Leipzig. Il est, depuis 2021, professeur au Collège de France, titulaire de la chaire Paléoanthropologie.

Jean-Jacques Hublin est co-fondateur de la Société européenne pour l’étude de l’évolution humaine (ESHE), dont il a été président de 2011 à 2020. Il a joué un rôle de pionnier dans le développement de la paléoanthropologie virtuelle.
L’évolution des Néandertaliens et le mécanisme d’expansion de notre espèce sur la planète ont occupé une place centrale dans sa carrière.

Il a aussi consacré de nombreuses études à l’évolution du cerveau ainsi qu’à la croissance et au développement chez les Hominines. Pour aborder ces questions, il a mené des recherches de terrain en Europe et en Afrique du Nord et a publié plus de 350 articles scientifiques.

Il est chevalier de la légion d’honneur et a été décoré par S.M. Mohamed VI du Wissam royal al-Kafaa al Fikria.
